Getting started

From installation to your first live page, in seven steps. It takes a few minutes if your theme is ready.

1. Install PageTree

Install PageTree from the back-office: Settings → Software Updates, attach the website to your project, then sync the project. The details are on the Installation page.

To create pages, you must be a superuser or have the Manage block pages permission.

2. Check the theme

PageTree fills the page, your theme dresses it. The active theme needs at least one layout containing the {% page %} tag.

A theme that already displays pages is fine. Otherwise, start from the minimal layout.

3. Create the page

  1. Open Block Pages in the back-office navigation.
  2. In the navigator on the left, in the Block Pages section, click Create, then New Page.
  3. In the document header, type the title. The URL is filled in from the title; you can change it, for example to /about.
  4. Choose a Layout. The preview and the website use this layout.
  5. Leave the Active switch on.

4. Add blocks

  1. Click Add Component. The block library opens.
  2. Click Hero banner to add it to the page.
  3. Add a Text block the same way.

You can also drag a block from the library into the block list.

5. Fill the blocks

  1. Double-click the Hero banner block: its form opens.
  2. Type a title and a subtitle. The preview updates.
  3. Click Back to Components (or Ctrl+Q).
  4. Do the same for the Text block.

6. Save

Click Save in the document toolbar, or press Ctrl+S (⌘+S on Mac).

7. Publish and check

  1. Click Scheduling in the toolbar and check that Published is on (it is by default).
  2. Leave the Publication Date empty to publish right away.
  3. Save, then click Open page: the page opens on the website, in a new tab.

A page is visible on the website only if it is active, published and its publication date, if any, is in the past. Otherwise its URL returns a 404 error. See Publishing and URLs.

Build the rest of the site

  • Add pages the same way. Their URLs make the tree: /services/audit sits under /services. See Tree and URLs.
  • Save time: duplicate a block, or copy blocks from one page and paste them into another. See Working with blocks.
  • Lay out content with the Section block (1 to 4 columns). See Layout.
  • Link your pages: PageTree pages can be picked in the October CMS page finder, under the Block Pages type, for menus and links.
  • Take care of search engines on each page. See SEO.
